I have swelling on the lateral side of both ankles, beneath the ankle looking towards the toes and wonder what is causing this.

I am 45 pounds overweight, menopausal, and just this morning experience a twinge of discomfort first in one ankle and then the second while going down a flight of stairs.  I am 59 years old.
