What causes a breoken blood vessel in the eye?

After no injury or blow to the eye, I awakened with a red eye that is getting worse. This happened Friday morning and it continues to spread over about 65% of the white of my eye.
I have been careful with exercise and I am not under stress.
Please advise, should I go to emergency as it is the weekend?
