I know this must be difficult for you. Swelling in the abdomen and lower extremities could be a sign of liver disease, or cirrhosis of the liver. The liver is responsible for the production of blood cells that help with clotting. Often, people with liver disease have small bruises, or bruise easily.

My brother is a heavy beer drinker and is 56 years old. His calves are very swollen and he is over weight. The veins in his face are very visable. He has been a drinker most of his life and I fear the worst for him.
