What are the different types of yoga? by Anne P. 1 Comments Posted in: Questions & Answers in Yoga-goers Team Many, many years ago I took classes in Hatha Yoga. I notice that there are a variety of types of classes offered now. How do they differ? How do you determine which type of class to take? I've just signed up for "Vinyasa flow" yoga and "Power" yoga but I truly don't have a clue what to expect in these classes. Hope I'm not in over my head (... Read on »
How to deal with noisy work environment? by Anne P. 2 Comments Posted in: Questions & Answers in Stress Relief My window at work faces a huge construction site - there are cranes, jack hammers, trucks and air horns blasting away throughout the day. I wear earplugs and sometimes play music but find I can't think straight with all of this intrusive noise. Has anyone else found a good way to manage long term noise pollution? Read on »
will a non-cardio exercize class help me lose weight? by Anne P. 2 Comments Posted in: Questions & Answers in Exercise I started an exercize class last week - lots of squats, lunges, resistance band work, push-ups and ab work. Intense work for about 50 minutes, twice a week. I know it will help me build strength and tone up but will I also lose some weight? I consistently walk 45 - 60 minutes at a relatively fast pace about 6 days a week. And yeah, I have to... Read on »
Caregiver support group on Stanford Campus by Anne P. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Stress Relief The Stanford WorkLife office and local elder services agency Avenidas co-sponsor a monthly support group for staff and faculty who have caregiving responsibilities for a parent, spouse, partner or other relative. I have personally found this group and the Avenidas staff to be a tremendous resource. Meetings are held at 655 Serra from 12:00 - 1... Read on »
Back on track after Thanksgiving! by Anne P. 2 Comments Posted in: Blog Posts in Weight loss I've walked a long route (20 to 30 minutes) to and from my office every day since the Thanksgiving weekend. I'm logging an average of 3 .5 to 4 miles every day without feeling any fatigue. I've also noticed that the walk seems quite short when I wear a headset and listen to music. No weight lost, though. Five day Vegan tryout by Anne P. 1 Comments Posted in: Blog Posts in Weight loss I challenged my meat-loving husband to a five day vegan only diet in December. This may not lead to any weight loss on my part but it will mean eating healthier and in a much more environmentally friendly manner. Now I need to gather recipes and ingredients - my husband is a "foodie" who is very fussy about his meals. I've sent out an SOS for... Read on »
No weight lost but the pants are looser by Anne P. Posted in: Blog Posts in Weight loss I've been getting in a bout an hour's walk five days a week along with one or two 30 minute bike rides. I have not loast an ounce but the waist of my pants isn't as tight as it was a month ago. Read on »
Wear my pedometer every day by Anne P. Posted in: Blog Posts in Exercise I've been forgetting to clip on my pedometer. I found that when i do wear it consistently I average 7,000 - 10,000 steps per day. Parking further away from the office is working out well (the public transit method of commuting took nearly 4 hours per day - not at all efficient and frankly, fatiguing). I walk 15 - 20 to and from the car, so if... Read on »
Find a workout buddy by Anne P. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Exercise I need to add strength training to my weekly activities but just can't seem to get myself over to the gym. It's free, not far away and full of great equipment. So what's stopping me? I guess I'm a little intimidated since i haven't done any strength training in a long time. I also don;t feel like going over there by myself. I think I need a... Read on »
Stocking up on fruit by Anne P. 1 Comments Posted in: Blog Posts in Healthy Eating I've been making a point of bringing in fruit every day (mostly organic) to keep on my desk. I'm going to bring in a large bowl so that I can have an attractive array of healthy snacks for myself and to share with my colleagues. Read on »
Tried public transportation for my commute by Anne P. 2 Comments Posted in: Blog Posts in Exercise After successfully adding longs walks from my car to my office I am now getting in even more walking. My purse with drivers license was stolen over the weekend so I've now figured out how to get to work by bus. Sort of. I got off the bus too early yesterday morning and walked nearly two miles to my office. I then barely missed the afternoon ... Read on »
How to avoid the office goodies? by Anne P. 3 Comments Posted in: Questions & Answers in Weight loss I work with a wonderful group of people who love to bring baked goods, donuts and candy to work. The goodies are located in a central area that just happens to be right outside my office door. My celery sticks just aren't satisfying when I smell the aroma of chocolate or see so many yummy temptations. When I do resist, I tend to make up for ... Read on »
park further from office by Anne P. 1 Comments Posted in: Blog Posts in Exercise I'm now parking at a lot located farther from my office then take an indirect route so that i can add a 12 - 15 minute walk to my daily exercize. This route allows me to avoid the noise and dust of nearby construction and i'm already noticing that I arrive at my office more relaxed than usual. Read on »
