There are many types of medications used to treat sleeping disorders including benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium) and alprazolam (Xanax), hypnotics such as zolpidem (Ambien, Stilnox) and sedating antidepressants such a trazadone (Desyrel), tehreem, so I can't make an definite recommendations on the limited information. I suggest you discuss discontinuing your medication with the prescribing physician.

However, as a general rule, no psycho active drug should be stopped suddenly if it has been taken daily for more than a few weeks. Not only may this produce unpleasant sensations, in some cases it may be life threatening. They should be weaned off in incremental steps over a period of weeks, and in some cases, months.

You need to also consider how you will manage any future sleeping problems.

Best wishes
