Be Ready!

Posted Jul 08 08 9:03am

Yesterday was quite a day! My son, Preston sustained a hand injury due to trying a fancy trick with a shopping cart. He was returning a shopping cart for his Grandmother after they finished up at the store, right before heading off to church camp. Preston decided to get some momentum with the cart and when it was going fast enough for his satisfaction he jumped up onto the front handle and tried to fly, feet off the ground. Well, since he weighs nearly 100 lbs. the front part of the shopping cart could not hold his weight and it flipped and sent him flying. But not the way he intended. He put his hands out in front of him to brace his fall, and his left hand went haywire. The last two fingers hit wrong and the nails were ripped off. The ring finger also suffered a nasty tear underneath the nail bed and the finger bone was broken. This turned into a six hour ordeal visiting the doctors in the ER.

It was nasty, it was bad. Preston was in a lot of pain, and I had to be there for him as his mom, to comfort and soothe him the best I could. It was a long afternoon, into the evening. I will have to admit, even though I was not anticipating this accident, I was ready for it physically. What I mean is, because I have been consistently keeping my body fit and healthy over the years, it was prepared to have the energy to handle being in the ER for so long. I had plenty of energy that never ran out, even with missing dinner at my normal time. I had the energy to give to my son, and not poop out on him. There was another woman who was in the ER the same time we were. She was in there because she was blacking out and having no energy. I was making an educated guess that her problems could have stemmed from the fact that she was very overweight, and she did have the energy to eat a fast food hotdog and soda that her friend brought to her while they were waiting to be called in to see a doctor. She also had the energy to get up and take two cigarette breaks, but by the time she got into a room next to us, she had to have two nurses help her to the bed. I was not trying to be nosy, but her bed was so close to my son’s that I could not help but overhear the doctor read off all the chemical drugs she was on for this and that. They did all kinds of tests and could not seem to find a cause to her blacking out and having no energy. I was wondering if maybe her cigarette smoking, obesity, poor eating habits and prescription drugs she was on might be ALL the causes to her problem. I also knew that if she were Preston’s mom she would not have been able to last the long hours in the ER supporting her son because she was the opposite extreme of being fit.

My son did really well. He was in a lot of pain and had to wait a long time, but he was a trooper, and the doctors said he should heal up well. My son is very athletic and I feed him healthy foods (sometimes I have to force them, but that is okay). I know this will contribute to him healing much faster than if he were an unhealthy, overweight child. My son just took off for church camp this morning. He was determined to go, and not let his accident keep him home.

I believe it is important to train your body to be strong and fit, because not only does this give you better quality of life but it also better prepares you for just in case there is an accident or something unexpected that might take a big physical effort to get through. If you do ever face an injury or disease, then having a healthy body will help you recover quicker and better. I look at Lance Armstrong as a great testimony to this. I am sure all of you know who he is. He won the Tour De France I think seven times! He also battled testicular cancer, and the by the time his cancer was diagnosed it had already spread throughout his whole body. He had a slim chance of survival. He beat all odds and did survive, winning many Tour De France’s after the cancer battle. He said he believes the main reason he survived was because his body was so well trained to endure, take physical pain, and because he was so fit to begin with. His body knew how to fight and was ready to fight anything that came its way. Is your body fit and ready to endure? Keep your body fit and you will have a much higher quality of life and you will be ready to fight and heal from any diseases or accidents that may come your way.
