I was driving downtown to go running this afternoon when I had an odd experience.
I was going down the main throughfare in town, a four-lane monstrosity with a high speed limit and a lot of traffic. I was on the left side of the road, moving quickly, approaching an intersection. The light changed to yellow and I began to brake.
The brakes seemed spongy. I braked harder. Time seemed to slow. I saw my car sailing into the intersection, through the light, into traffic at full speed. I saw my car clip another, spin to the side, roll. I saw it land on its roof, saw traffic slowing and people staring at the wreck. I saw myself trapped inside, stuck in the wreckage. Saw myself beneath the bright lights of trauma.
I blinked, snapped out of it. My heart was racing. I felt hot. I took a deep breath, checked myself, reoriented myself. I was fine, car stopped at the intersection, not rolled over on the other side. The light was red. I was intact. My car was undamaged.
Apparently it was just some sort of daydream.
That’s never happened to me before. I don’t know what to think.
