Is a fatty deposit that is rowing into the muscle considered a cist?

My daughter had a lump on her back between her shoulders and below her neck, the dr said it was a fatty deposit, that it would be unusal for a it to be any thing else and because she ws having so much pain he would remove it.  When he cut into her he saw it was growing into her muscle, so he cut deeper cutting out muscle  and she woke up during this time in pain and in tears.  It was removed the but it is now a year later and it is starting to act the same like it is growning back, common or not would somithing like this be concidered a cist of some type?  She is going to see a different doctor.
