Bonds fights back

Posted by Larissa

Barry Bonds has hired two attorneys to legally prosecute any individuals making false statements about him. Since 2003, he has been accused of using steroids and is tired of it. The "home run king" is not going to go after media, rather people who think they know something about him, but really don't. A statement made my Michael Traynor to the editor of The San Mateo Daily News states, "What kind of career would Barry Bonds have enjoyed if he had not used designer drugs to bulk up but has just used his natural, God-given ability to play the game he loves?" What do you think about that statement and the situation?

I am a firm believer of freedom of speech. We need that God given write to speak, write freely. It appears Michael Traynor made an opinion about Bonds with no true sources to back it up. Any intelligent person would see this for what it is -- sensationalism. Show me a reliable source, then I might believe it. I understand Bonds situation. He is a celebrity and it goes with the territory. But, is someone outright slanders or libels Bonds, he has a right to prosecute. Hand full of celebrities have taken newspapers, individuals to court and won substantial money. All the power to Bonds.
The attack on Bonds has been sickening to me, with baseball turning it's back on him when they knew good and well what was going on the entire time when he was breaking the single season record. But, I understand the importance of freedom of speech. Like Kenna mentioned, it's an opinion, but it can easily be taken to the next level by everyone assuming that they know the truth when they don't. It's pretty obvious that Bonds took steroids (notice I didn't say performance enhancing drugs) with the increase in his size. While I believe athletes have done everything possible they could do get the greatest edge, and that if steroids were around when Hank Aaron or even Babe Ruth were around, they'd have taken them as well, I understand that our journalists should have the freedom to investigate and express themselves.
