Poll indicates baseball fans think half of players use drugs

Posted Mar 03 2009 2:05pm

According to a New York Times-CBA News poll, 66 percent of baseball fans are bothered by steroid use by players, and 44 percent say Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez should not be allowed in the Hall of Fame. The results of the poll appeared in The Times Thursday.

The 60 percent of fans who said the use of performance-enhancing drugs mattered a lot to them was up from 53 percent last year, according to The Times.

Nearly half of those surveyed, 47 percent, said any major league record set by a steroid user should carry a note indicating the drug use, and 32 percent said the record should be eliminated altogether. Fewer than 20 percent favored keeping a steroids-tainted record on the books.

Thirty-seven percent of fans surveyed said they believed that at least half of major league players use steroids, and another 38 percent said a quarter use them. Nineteen percent said few players use drugs.

The nationwide telephone poll was conducted with 1,112 adults, of whom 429 said they were very or somewhat interested in baseball. The margin of sampling error for baseball fans is plus or minus 5 percentage points. Interviewing began last Wednesday and was completed Sunday evening. During this period, information emerged about Rodriguez's ties to a trainer who has been linked with steroids
