I have $495...

Posted Jun 13 2009 12:40am
As of this morning I've raised $495 for the San Francisco AIDS foundation (thanks to a very, very generous donation from Angry - a more formal thanks is forthcoming). My goal before the end of the day is to have over $500. To help me reach this goal, please visit aidslifecycle.org/2275 and make a donation of $5 or more. The person who puts me over $500 will get a very special prize.

To warm you up, here are some facts about HIV/AIDS and the San Francisco AIDS foundation:
* AIDS has killed over 22 million people worldwide, and is responsible for over 415,000 of those deaths in the United States alone.
* There are roughly 151,000 people living with HIV or AIDS in California alone, 18,679 of whom live in the San Francisco area. 18 thousand people is nearly the entire population of town where I live right now.
* "Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART, many HIV positive people now live longer with HIV and have a better quality of life and health. New drugs and new formulations continue to simplify anti-HIV therapy, allowing many HIV positive people to take only a few pills a day." (SFAF web site)
* "While insurance plans and AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs) are available to pay for treatment for many people with HIV in the U.S., ADAPs are under increasing financial strain, and--despite the development of generic versions of anti-HIV drugs--treatment remains out of reach for some 90% of people with HIV/AIDS worldwide." (SFAF web site) This is where your donations come in.
* Every year the San Francisco AIDS foundation provides hundreds of new cases with treatment by connecting clients "to a network of care delivery--including primary care physicians, access to medications, substance use programs, mental health support, financial benefits counseling and other supportive services--to help them negotiate the complex set of issues related to HIV and improve their health" (SFAF web site), not only through the SF AIDS Foundation, but also their sister organizations, UCSF AIDS Health Project ( http://www.ucsf-ahp.org), and Shanti Project ( http://www.shanti.org).
* The San Francisco AIDS foundation provides several support groups including those aimed at specific cultural and ethnic groups such as African Americans and Latinos, and provides counseling, education, and clean syringes to intervenes drug users, to not only prevent the spread of HIV, but also help individuals recover from addiction.

So remember, be the first to donate $5 or more, and you will receive a VERY SPECIAL prize, which I will announce just as soon as I have a winner.
