Cancer Fraud

Posted Mar 03 2009 4:14pm
I can't believe I'm even saying the words, cancer fraud. I've seen a couple of stories recently about women "pretending" to have cancer.

The first one I read seemed almost sad. A Goldsboro woman accused of bilking her neighbor for money on a health claim faces charges for never spending that money on medical bills, authorities say. She is accused of taking about $16,000 from her neighbor after claiming she needed surgery on brain tumors. I don't know what her situation was, maybe she didn't see another way out and it looks like she only hurt one person.

Then this woman - A Glens Falls woman who has told people she has cancer for the last seven years was arrested Monday on charges she defrauded those who donated thousands of dollars to help her with medical bills.

Then this woman's story came out. A former city of Chattanooga employee received more than $79,000 in wages and benefits from the city as a result of her faking a battle with breast cancer.

These don't include all the internet scams that are out there. I'm a member of an internet group that had a member who was scamming everyone until she was caught and no one saw her online again.

Now I joked with friends during treatment that only the cool chicks got to go bald, I belonged to a special club, ha ha ha. When I see these kinds of stories I wonder what the root cause is. Are these women mentally ill? Is it the ultimate in narcissism? Or are they just plain old cons, you know thieves and this is just a new strategy? Have you had an experience like this? What do you think?
