It is a wonderful day in Bunnyland!
Since trying some rice cereal for the
first time last night, we have had incredible success. Vivienne's nausea and vomiting is improved, oh, maybe 80-90%. We have now done four (4!) feedings of thin rice cereal in a bottle, and seen no real throwing up. Vivi spit up just a tiny mouthful last night, and had a little bit of morning throw up just as we started to eat. After that, she ate much more and has kept it all down.
We used an organic rice cereal called
Happy Bellies, by a company aptly called Happy Baby. It contains probiotics (those healthy bacteria that are good for your digestive system, such as in active culture yogurt). While we are a little hesitant that Vivi's compromised immune system might mean we should not use this cereal generally, her counts are fine right now and we will ask at clinic as soon as we have an opportunity. If the dietician approves it, we will continue to use this cereal. Given all the chemo and associated antibiotics Vivi must get, perhaps restoring her digestive bacteria will be very good for her.
We are not normally organic food obsessed, but with all Vivi is going through we think the fewer preservatives and weird chemicals might be the better. Plus, this cereal has CERTAINLY delivered on the "happy" part of its promise.
This morning, Vivi and I woke together at about 7:30am. I walked into her room and the second she saw me, she lit up with the most charming smiles. She could not restrain the smiles. She was thrilled. Without words, she was definitely saying "Oh Good Morning, Mommy! I am so incredibly filled with joy to see you, and I am feeling great!". What a phenomenal start to the day.
When I popped her on the changing table for a diaper replacement, she was initially furious. But I drew her attention to a very pretty picture of a fish with silver scales that I had placed in her changing table line of vision, and she calmed down pretty quickly. Vivienne LOVES fish. Of course we know she enjoys her
fish book, and Daddy with his fish
tattoo. She also has developed an absolute love of looking into the various saltwater fish tanks placed in
different waiting rooms at St. Jude. The bright colors and slow but erratic movements are perfect for a baby's attention. Maybe one day, scuba and snorkeling will be her favorite hobbies!
Now, after watching a great Beatrix Potter video and a little bit of Sesame Street during breakfast, the Queenling (puke-free) is napping comfortably.
