Halloween Costume

Posted Nov 03 2008 9:03pm

Well, Vivi is going to be a shoo-in as a cute pirate for Halloween. After discovering nerve damage resulting in some deafness on one side, Vivi was scheduled for an eye test, too. It turns out that while there are some challenges to her right eye, she does have sight from it. But, the nerve that controls the eye (IIIrd Cranial Nerve) may have been weakened.

When we see, our eye sends chemical signals to our brain that is nothing more than patterns of light. The brain interprets these signals. Because these pathways and interactions aren't yet fully developed in babies, we have to be extra careful with Vivienne. If her eye continues to not focus or not track well, her brain will start ignoring those signals. The result would be that although she can see, physically, her brain disregards all the signals.

In order to guard against this, Vivienne is going to have an eye patch. She will need to wear it about 30 minutes at a time, a few times a day, on the good eye. This will help strengthen her "bad" eye, attempting to limit her loss of sight as much as we can.

Considering I anticipated learning she was irrevocably blind in that eye, a limited visual disability with some potential for improvement is GREAT NEWS!
