Richard was able to leave the hospital about noon on the day after the transplant. He was feeling fine, a little manic from
dexamethasone, but otherwise ok. His feet were a little puffy and his face was flushed. We walked back to our apartment.
Transplant patients take a lot of meds. Most of them are to prevent infection. Richard's included antibiotics:
Pen VK 500mg twice a day,
Levaquin 750 mg once a day,
Bactrim DS twice a day, antiviral
acyclovir 400 mg twice a day, and antifungal
fluconazole 400 mg once a day and
ursodiol three times a day to prevent liver disease. He also continued to take his usual meds including
metformin 100 mg bid,
lisinopril 10 mg once a day,
Effexor 75 mg once a day,
omeprazole 20 mg, and
allopurinol 300 mg once a day. He was also on
cyclosporine 350 mg twice a day. Cyclosporine comes in 100 mg and 25 mg capsules, so each dose is 5 capsules. This gets to be a problem when the white count bottoms out and the
mucositis and nausea start.
Keeping track of all this wasn't easy. I felt like I was back in the hospital again passing meds. Seriously, I can see how some one not familiar with medications could make a mistake.
