Sleepy Day

Posted Aug 26 2008 11:30am
Today ended up being a sleepy day. By the way, this is Sadie Mae - our sweet little red-tick coonhound girl who passed away in June. I was still learning how to use our digital camera we got from eBay and ended up catching her in the middle of a yawn. I thought this pic was appropriate since I am trying to give you visual glimpses into my life amidst my ramblings.

So - back to my sleepy day. I got up at 4am - this time it wasn't Shannon scratching or nibbling at my fingertips or coughing loudly in her own little 'get up and give me a treat' way. I didn't even have to go to the bathroom - I just woke up perky. Apparently my body thought that reading a mindless magazine until 10:30pm and then sleeping til 4am was enough rest. By 9am I was tired again and told my husband I was going to lay down for a little bit. Yea - my husband knows me better than that! It is more like 'see you this afternoon sometime'. I read for about 15 minutes (and if I have to read another article announcing that Brittney Spears is pregnant I will just puke) and then dozed off. I didn't wake up until about 1pm - just in time to find out the Browns weren't playing until 4pm. Somewhere during the 4th quarter I became fevered, curled up in my warmest blanket and donned my brown and orange toboggan that my aunt knitted and fell asleep again. This time I didn't wake up until about 9:30pm - just in time to see my husband off to bed. So, here I sit blogging until I get sleepy. Shouldn't take long.

I am not a sports fan. Never really cared for watching sports before - with the exception of the Cleveland Indians at the World Series in - I think 1997 or 1998 - can't remember what year that was. I only became interested in the Cleveland Indians that year because my nephew had been diagnosed with a rare blood disease and his biggest wish was to meet the Indians. It only took a few phone calls to arrange a visit for my nephews to an Indians game where they could meet the team. What we didn't expect was the warm welcome the boys received. The boys got to go to the dugout as well as toss the ball on the field with the likes of Jim Thome, David Justice and Orel Hershheiser. The boys got signed balls and bats to take home......it was all very cool. From that moment I became somewhat of a fan. I was always grateful to those grown men

who took the time to make a lifelong memory for my nephews. My nephew Ryan is now 20 and travels with his music - he was blessed with remission and we all hope it will last.

It was coming up on the World Series this year when I felt myself drawn back into the web of baseball. Maybe it was the fact that we are in the country with only a TV antenna or perhaps I just knew that something was wrong. I watched the Indians try to get to the Series. I found myself becoming more familiar with the Red Sox during those games and knew by their names who could cause the Indians some trouble. And lets not forget 'Mannie' - that wild hair running the bases - I swear that is either a wig, a hair piece or something sewn in. Only a girl would wonder such a thing. I remember the Red Sox winning the right to go to the Series and telling my dad that I would watch the Series just to see the Rockies beat the snot out of the Red Sox. I became a Red Sox fan during the first game of the Series - and I cried with the Rockies at their defeat just as I had done for the Indians. This is why girls make terrible sports fans - instead of screaming for the winning team we cry at the sight of the tears of defeat from the losing team - or at least I do. I think it is just the emotions you can see in their faces. Knowing that they have worked for this all season and they really really wanted to win. I hate to see anyone lose a fight.

Baseball may bring out the tissues for me - but Football is entirely different - it brings out the sleepy head in me. I have yet to make it through an entire football game without falling asleep. I don't fully understand football the way I understand baseball. Must be a girl thing. The only thing I understand is where they are supposed to run to score a 7 point touchdown and that they can get 3 points by kicking the ball through the goal post. 1st and 10 or 2nd and 8 - I couldn't tell you what the heck that means. And it makes no sense to me why the yard line always changes for when they are allowed to kick the ball. I don't understand flags being thrown onto the field either. This is probably why I fall asleep. I am going to try to understand basketball when that season rolls around. We used to play it in gym class - so how hard could it be to follow? I will just have to learn their point system and what their version of a foul is - do they even have foul balls?

When I got diagnosed I told myself I wanted to try some new things. Yes, if we had the money to actually leave the property and do more then sports would not be my first pick. But you take what you can get and work with what you have - and the only thing on television when you have an antenna is sports on the weekend. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I always thought of myself as blessed that I had a husband who was not obsessed with sports. Never once in our 14 years of marriage has he turned on a game for the heck of it - it just wasn't his thing. Now there were times when we had cable that he would watch boxing, but that was it. I have now converted him, and I didn't mean to, but I caught him actually watching football when I woke up from my nap this afternoon. The kind of watching where you totally don't even notice your wife in the room. Great - my insanity has rubbed off. Well- we will just see how far this sports thing goes this winter. Perhaps instead of basketball I will try to convert him to watching figure skating and gymnastics :)

Needless to say, we never made it to the store today. We will try for it tomorrow. It seems lately that if I can't get out of the house by 10am - then I am too tired to try later. I hate feeling this tired. I have always loved a good nap - but this is really getting ridiculous.
