Thanksgiving

Posted Jan 22 2009 6:46pm
The angst of a food based holiday is not lost on my life, it just isn't where my energies are focused right now.
For my family, the coming Thanksgiving day is to be a day of well needed leisure and peace, not a marathon of travel and forced camaraderie with folks that we do not want to be around.
This year is a home holiday. Just the four of us to celebrate and share our thanks for this amazing year.

So when I read my usual assortment of GF blogs all concerned with the abundance of gluten free food available, I can give thanks that this year I know exactly how to prepare.

First, we will start the day just like today with our favorite slow down breakfast.

WAFFLES
And most likely one of our daughters will happily make them. Can I tell you all just how grateful I am to have my nine year old's making breakfast? Even if I have to help her get the waffle out of the iron, she makes the batter (from Scratch!) and monitors it.

Then we will get ready to cook. A free range organic turkey from the Coop, baked butternut or acorn squash, mashed rutabagas if I can find any, mashed potatoes, stuffing (I'll be using up all the GF bread ends that are in our freezer) gravy made with sweet rice flour. Steamed carrots with dill, Brussel sprouts, creamed onions, maybe another veggie if something at the farmers market captures my attention.
Cranberry sauce, and maybe even some eggnog if we really feel like it.

Then we need some dessert. Fiona wants to make a lemon meringue pie as well as a pumpkin one.
Kate isn't really sure but maybe a custard is her current choice.

We'll round it out with some wine for us adults and sparkling apple cider for the girls.

We'll laugh and cook and have fun all day. Maybe take a hike up lookout mountain to work up an appetite.
Peace and joy is our goal.

And then we'll host our annual Buy Nothing Day pot luck on Friday.
Ever since I worked for Macy's Northeast, oh so long ago, I try my hardest to not shop on Black Friday. I can't imagine what item will be on sale that would entice me to leave my home in the middle of the night to wait to shop.

Hope this gives some inspiration to all.
