This one strikes me as a WHAT? How? kind of moment.
What is barley malt extract doing in a gf product?
How does the company explain it?
Well
Navan Foods decided to ask Van's those questions and got this terrific response.
Van's Removing Barley Malt from Gluten Free Pancakes & French Toast Sticks

The new Van's Gluten Free Homestyle pancakes arrived in the store a couple of weeks back. When we looked at the ingredients, we were surprised to learn that the pancakes contained malt extract. We contacted the company and learned that the malt extract was from barley. The company did ensure us that they tested the malt extract for the presence of gluten and that it receives a Certificate of Analysis from their supplier indicating that their product contains less than 20 ppm gluten. And because the products test for less than 20ppm, they can be labeled Gluten Free in accordance with the FDA's proposed regulations.
Today we received correspondence from the company informing us that they were eliminating the malt from the gluten free pancakes and french toast sticks. In its correspondence to us, the company states:
Vans is removing the malt exact from the ingredients on these products (Wheat Free Pancakes & Wheat Free French Toast Sticks). Van’s has stringent testing for all Wheat Free products. However, we do understand that the inclusion of malt extract in our new products has caused confusion among some Van’s gluten free consumers, so we’ve decided to go above and beyond the regulatory parameters. These changes should go in effect during our next production run. However, the packages will include malt extract in the ingredients until packaging flows through the distribution channels.
Bravo to the company for listening to its consumers!
And a big thank you to Navan Foods for their follow up on this problem.
