What could be the cause of high white blood count in child?

I took my daughter to the hospital today and they did an xray and a urine specimen and a blood culture. They told me that her white blood count was up and they gave her an antibodic shot. what could cause this. She has been running a fever now on and off for the last 3 weeks, I have took her to her family doctor and they told me just to give her tylenol for the fever. They said it could be due to her possably cutting teeth. Please help I am a worried mother and afarid that maybe she could have something medical wrong that is serious.
