The stress response is normal, healthy, and necessary alarm. If the stress response is sustained there may be a risk of illness and disease. The level and duration of the alarm depend on the expectancy of the outcome of stimuli and the specific responses available for coping.

The most common health complaints of stress are subjective health complaints like musclepain, tiredness and mood changes. These are normal aches of short duration and low intensity for most people. For some, the pain s and complaints are substantial and long-lasting with serious implications for functioning.

Health complaints due to stress can be separated into "normal" and endurable pain and complaints, and intolerable complaints that need professional help. These stress related conditions are most often non-specific, and are the most common reason for encounters with health professionals, and the most frequent reason for sick leave and disability. There is a striking presence of other diseases for all these conditions.

Psychobiological sensitization within neural loops, maintained by sustained stress activation, has been suggested as a mechanism for these conditions.   Ursin H. Eriksen H. Cognitive activation theory ofstress, sensitization, and common health complaints.Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. 1113:304-10, 2007 Oct.
