How To Cope With Winter

Posted Dec 20 2008 5:58pm

winter Okay, let’s face it.  When the temperature can’t even make it above zero, it’s difficult to get motivated to exercise.  The cardio takes a pass.  No walking today.  Here are some ways to cope with winter.

1.  Bring your workout indoors.
With so many exercise DVDs available, if not at the store then certainly for rent through a service like Netflix, there isn’t an excuse not to try something at home.  My personal favorites are workouts that take me to warm places like Suzanne Deason’s, Lower Body Conditioning.  The Hawaiian setting is so relaxing.

2.  Move your booty.
Workouts don’t have to be long and tedious.  I came across this very effective eight minute lower body workout that is just the thing.  It’s not hard.  Twice a day is not horribly demanding.  Focus on these large muscle groups brings good results in the long term, by increasing their metabolism.

3.  Clean house.
Some of the hardest workouts I’ve ever done, the kind that brought me to the point of exhaustion, were household projects.  We recently remodeled parts of our house.  They weren’t huge projects, just things like removing wallpaper and painting.  They did me in though.  Besides, the house looks great now and I have the added satisfaction of a clean house.

4.  Don’t fight it; embrace winter.
We jokingly refer to Minnesota as having nine months of winter and three months of tough sledding.  It’s a wonderful thing about people here–they embrace winter.  People had their fish houses in the drive, ready to go in September.  You’re not going to fight it.  Might as well enjoy it.

Need some ideas?  Ririan Project had a great post about keeping fit this winter.  There’s skiing, snow shoeing, and sledding.  The big pay off here is that crosscountry skiing, for example, is a killer of a workout, burning upwards of 500 calories or more an hour.

Just because the temperature has dropped, there’s no reason while your fitness must suffer.  Learn how to cope with winter and you’ll be that much healthier.  Photo by mathias-erhart
