August 02, 2008 Keeping in shape with COPD is hard, you CAN do it-choose to keep moving

Posted Aug 02 2008 12:05pm

roxylncgd@comcast.netDiagnosis with COPD is a hard sucker punch, and a roller coaster ride of emotions follows.

You are told to inhale 'powder', to exercise, to change your style of living, give up favorite activities that are dangerous for breathing health, and if needing supplemental oxygen...you are put on a leash!

Some medicine side effects are awful, dry mouth, constipation, to name two annoying ones. It takes a while to cope with all that!

But, try to be positive after some grieving for you losses. You are diagnosed - and can now start to make choices that will manage your disease and improve your ease in breathing and quality of life. You have to work with what you have, wishing for more or complaining doesn't help and is actually detrimental to your well being. It will be hard work, but worth it.

See a pulmonalogist. Work with them to find the best medicine for you, choose a safer and healthy lifestyle: be aware of the air you breathe, the food you eat, how much you sleep and exercise-exercise-exercise. Needless to say, stop smoking if you do so, and remove yourself from smoky harmful air.
