can working in a dental lab with all sorts of chemicals cause COPD

I have a friend that has severe COPD and he worked in a dental lab in the military for 2 years.  He wondered if there was any connection between COPD and the dentaL LAB since there are so many chemicals and in the 60's there were old buildings that had contamination already in them.
