A few weeks ago I mentioned the possibility of making dance more available to the public by giving it out for free. Why don’t more companies post videos to YouTube? Marketing strategies in 2008 have come a long way since modern dance companies began struggling with finances back when they were first sprouting. Pilobolous has been featured in commercials, as has one other company (unknown to me) in a Hanes commercial. Still, the average American learns about dance from reality TV shows. PATHETIC. How about producing VIRAL videos? Artistic campaigns should reach out to the public and generate buzz and interest, boosting ticket sales. Can most companies afford to budget for PR? I don’t know, but creating something that is both artistically solid and creatively entertaining shouldn’t be hard when you’re working with a dance company.
As a dancer and blogger I’ve found that The Great Dance Dance Blog hits it right on the bullseye. Fox’s February 28th post “Danciti and Article19 are off the mark in their youtube criticism” is completely relevant to this topic. I wasn’t aware of these two blogs until today and will check them out - but Doug Fox over at Great Dance seems to know what he’s talking about.
To support his already well written counter argument I’m including an example of a high quality YouTube video posted by the innovative company LaLaLaHumanSteps. |
