red "gap" sore forming near base of tooth on roof of the mouth

I've had a cold for the past week and noticed a few days ago that a patch of my gum is forming a red sore "gap" on the roof of my mouth near the base of a tooth. It looks kind of like when you burn the roof of your mouth and the skin begins to erode. I'm wondering if its an infection from the cold, an irritation, or something more serious? The tooth itself isn't sensitive, just the sore.
