Sudden Painful Bleeding Gums

My kids have been sick with the flu, and I have managed not to get it so far.  I have felt tinges of something but so far so good.  However, a couple of days ago my gums became very painful.  In fact, I cant even really brush my teeth easily they hurt so bad...and they are bleeding a bunch.  I normally have healthy gums and no problems with pain or bleeding when brushing or flossing normally.  What is happening?
