Tired of all the choices and all the advertising hype? For most people we simply recommend whatever choice you like best as long as it’s is ADA approved. There are a multitude of toothpastes that are “tarter-control”, and these work fine in most people. Tarter-control is not recommended for people with gumline recession or root as they tend to more abrasive and can increase tooth sensitivity. For those individuals with recession or root sensitivity, there are a number of “sensitivity control” toothpastes that can be beneficial in some cases.
All toothpastes advertise to “whiten and brighten.” All must, by FDA regulation, have some form of abrasive agents to advertise themselves as toothpaste, and will remove superficial or extrinsic stains. There is not any active ingredient that will actually bleach, or whiten; the absorbed intrinsic stains on teeth. The ingredients are not strong enough, not regulated, applied too short of time, and washed off too quickly. For those stains in-office or home assisted bleaching or whitening is available through the office.
For individuals highly susceptible to decay, AIM has an extra high fluoride (1500 ppm) as compared to the normal 1000 ppm of fluoride. Prescription based (5000 ppm) fluoride is also available also for high decay or high sensitivity persons. Clo-sys (formally Retardex) chorine dioxide toothpaste is also available for persons with persistent gingivitis or bad breath (through the office on request).
