Team Type 1

Posted May 12 2009 6:03pm
Team Type 1 is a long-distance cycling team comprised of Type 1 diabetics. They've won the 3052 mile Race Across America (RAAM) twice since placing second in 2006.

The team was founded in 2004 by two Type 1 diabetics, Phil Southerland and Joe Eldridge, and became the first pro cycling team devoted to raising diabetes awareness. Currently, they are sponsored by Sanodi-Aventis, makers of the basal insulin LANTUS and rapid-acting insulin, APIDRA. Sponsorship has permitted team expansion to five teams (men's professional cycling, women's professional cycling, a mixed team, a 2009 RAAM team and a Type 1 diabetic triathlon team). In addition, an amateur Type 2 diabetic cycling team has been put together.
