Why am I always hungry?

Posted by Katherine B.

I always feel hungry. I don't know if it's psychological or physiological. I wake up and I'm starving. I eat about 300-500 calories for breakfast. I try to eat a lot of protein and whole grains. When I'm done eating I'm still hungry; I just stop because I've had enough calories. Then about an hour later I'm starving for lunch, so I eat an early lunch. I eat between 500 and 600 calories for lunch. Again, I try to eat protein, whole grains and a healthy amount of fat. Usually I still feel hungry when I finish lunch, but not as hungry as when I started eating. About three hours later I'm starving again, so I'll have a snack. Then I eat dinner about 2 hours later. I'm not sure how many calories I consume at dinner, but it's definitely over 600. By the time I go to bed I'm so hungry my stomach hurts so bad, so I have a glass of milk and some type of whole grain snack. Not only do I feel hungry, but I get lightheaded, shaky, irritable, anxious, etc. a couple hours after I eat.

I exercise about 5 days a week for 1-2 hours on those days. Other than that I'm not overly active. I try to drink a lot of water all day. I'm 5'3 and about 112 pounds, so I'm not undernourished. But I am worried about gaining weight because I'm eating all the time.

Why do I feel so hungry all the time? It's driving me crazy and makes it hard to live a normal life, because I have to make sure I always have food with me, and that I can get a meal every few hours.
