A New Word

Posted Oct 17 2008 6:18pm

Gabi has learned a new word, and I wish I could get it out of her vocabulary. She says "stupid." Only, she doesn't just say it, she uses it in a sentence like, "Mommy, your so stupid." She has said that to me twice. I have tried to explain to her that it is not a very nice word and made her apologize to me. I know most people are probably wondering where she has heard it. I am certain it was from Jeremy, but he doesn't call people that. He just says things like, "That's so stupid." Maybe we all use it in that sense. Not really sure. Anyhow, the result is a little girl who wants to use that word and is! Any recommendations other than what I am already doing?

Ryan thinks that the only reason I am stressing about it is because of Gabi having Down syndrome (much like the r-word), but I know I have dealt with the same issues when Jeremy was younger prior to Gabi. Words like hate, stupid, shut up, etc... are not nice words especially coming out of young mouths. I didn't allow Jeremy to say them then, and I am not going to allow Gabi to say them now.
