Rash Answers

Posted Aug 23 2008 3:08pm
I took Gabi to the pediatrician this morning for the rash I posted about. He asked all of the usual questions...
(The doctor's words are in red .)

"Any new foods?" - No...

"New detergents or soaps?" - No...

"Has she gotten into anything?" - Uh... is that a trick question?

"Fevers?" - No, but her teacher mentioned her being sleepy a couple days this week at school... I gave her Benadryl last night to see if it would help even though she wasn't itching, but the rash was still there this morning. "So she hasn't been scratching?" Nope.

(Then he sees the rash.)

"Hmmm..." What, do you think it's Fifth?

"No, it's definitely not Fifth. That usually has a more lacey appearance." (I remain quiet while he looks at her rash and feels it.)

"I say it's either viral _____ or Strep." Strep? "Yeah. Has she had any trouble eating?" Nope.
A throat swab later and bingo we have a winner... Strep! Poor girl, I didn't even know. Then she got a shot in the bum to end her visit! By the time we left, Gabi was very, VERY angry at me. She had this look on her face with her eyebrows scrunched together, pouty lips, and rubbing her bottom saying "Mommy!" but with a definite angry voice. I just kept saying, "I know, Gabi, you are angry with me. I am very sorry, but we had to make sure you were gonna get better." Now hopefully, no one else in the house comes down with it. Just 1 week into school and Gabi is already gonna miss two days. I hope this isn't a sign of how the rest of the school year is gonna be.
