My endurance has apparently checked out for the week. I’m not sure where it went or when it’s coming back, but I do know that it’s Gone. And I got a little restless waiting for its return.
It could be the altitude. It could be the traveling. It could be the wine I’ve had every night while reading on my porch. It could just be that my body wasn’t up for a 30 mile week. Who knows! It could also be all (or none) of the above.

Rather than searching for said endurance, I’ve just been experimenting over here! The track is too close to ignore, and I haven’t had access to one of those in quite some time. As you can see in posts below, I’ve just been doing random things and mostly speed/tempo runs. If you can even call them that? More like a jumble of workouts put together to avoid boredom and/or make up for the fact that I skipped my Long Run for the week.

Sunday morning: 8 miles? No thanks.
Testing out whether or not I really can hit a 7-minute mile? SURE. Why not.
This time I drove to the track, rather than running the 1.5 miles to get there. Why waste the energy? I need that energy for at least one mile! The run started off with 2 warm up laps, and a quick sprint to get that blood flowing.
I turned the iPod onto my new song and reset the Garmin; ready to go!
mile 1 - 6:42
When I hit the first 400m in 1:35 I thought “ Wellll, I hope that pace holds for 3 more laps… ” Yes, it did. And whoa I was TIRED at the end of that mile – but So pumped! That is definitely the fastest mile I’ve ever ran. I took a recovery minute (or two….) and walked a lap. Then I started mile number 2.
mile 2 – 8:02
I didn’t want to push it and I didn’t want to be completely “relaxed”. This is the middle ground.
After this I was over the whole “1600 repeats” idea. We’ll call this, Running-plan-ADD. Let’s do the stairs instead! I run a lap, exit at the end, and start the stairs. The stadium is set up so you can do 4 up and 4 down (snake-style). I did this twice with one lap running in between. Average Pace ~8:45.
2 x stairs + 2 x 400m
Okay, done with that now; the thighs are burning and it’s getting hottt. So, for the last hoorah, I went with 400s. Three of them…..
1 – 1:50
2 – 1:44
3 – 1:35*
* I had to see what kind of fuel was left in those muscles. Needless to say I was completely exhausted, but this felt pretty good.

I’m headed back to DC today! Out of the altitude, but not out of the heat. I’ll be exchanging my shoes on Tuesday, and back to running the city as soon as possible!
