Beautiful Sunrise - My best time to workout

Posted Mar 08 2009 3:39pm

First, I've been hosting a conference all week and I've not checked in on my regular blogs. Sorry if I've missed commenting on something awesome, but I'm working this morning on catching up.

I love my early morning workouts, and while there are times those extra couple hours of sleep sound really good, I know my day will not go nearly as well without my early morning workout.

My coworkers and I had this debate last week. I was hosting a conference and found myself having trouble fitting in sleeping, working, exercise and making sure I was eating right. By Friday I found myself feeling very tired, but I still woke up to go for my morning run.

Later the debate on workout times started when I admitted I was a little tired. One of my male teacher friends, who is also a strength and conditioning trainer, felt like working out in the afternoon made more sense.

After looking around for solid research on the subject we found this article in the New York Times. Siting a study published on PubMed research does seem to find that afternoon workouts are slightly better then those 4am workouts. The results were minimally better for afternoon workouts.

Of course, working out only works if you're able to fit it in, and even if those studies tell me that afternoon workouts are te best, for me morning workouts are vital to my daily routine.

Today a friend gave me the book "8 Minutes in the Morning" to review. I've not read it yet, but if you guys have let me know what you think. I'm going to try and start it tomorrow morning on my treadmill.
