For the past ten days in Calgary, the world famous
Calgary Stampede has been occurring. For those of you who don't know, the Stampede is the biggest rodeo and party in the world. It is crazy and fun, but with it comes non-stop revelry and indulgence. I have been enjoying the festivities and as a result missing workouts and eating poorly. Three days ago I attended my first boot camp training session hosted by
Marty Hansen and I was dragging ass the whole time.
His training sessions are always great and I learn something every time. On Wednesday he put us through a well thought out workout in the park. We warmed up for about 10-15 minutes, starting with some joint mobility movements, then progressing into dynamic stretching, and finally some challenging body weight drills. Once we were warm he set up a series of drills and had us
train in a circuit . The drills included
slosh pipe movements, push-ups, medicine ball throws,
farmers walks , step-ups and other full body movements. We used a 40 second work to 20 second rest ratio. It was challenging but not a killer, which makes sense because Marty is planning a progression of difficulty. He told me that by the end of the July Boot Camp we will be working extremely hard. It is great to have someone else plan out my training for a change, all I have to worry about is showing up!
I missed Thursday and Friday's sessions due to Stampede debauchery so I attempted a kettlebell workout on Saturday afternoon. After 10 days of indulgence and late nights my performance was abysmal! I did a circuit of kettlebell swings, push-ups, goblet squats, kettlebell cleans, Turkish get-ups and kettlebell rack lunges. I love this workout because it covers the six basic movements
Alwyn Cosgrove teaches (lower body push and pull, lunge, twist, upper body push and pull) in a quick kettlebell circuit. Unfortunately my body was not willing. I did a few rounds and called it a workout. I was a little pissed but that is what you get for partying 10 days straight.
So, now that Stampede is winding down and old friends are going back home, I will be focusing on eating well and training hard. I am going to see just how lean and fit I can get in three full weeks of Boot Camp. My diet will be the Paleolithic diet and I will post my dietary thoughts on my
other blog . All training will consist of the boot camp with some mini-workouts when I have the chance.
