Can I Get A Good Spot? - part 2

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:26pm
Okay, you've accepted the mission of spotting some stranger at the gym. Now here are few extra tips to be sure your mission is successful and appropriate.

Lance's
Do This,Not That
for spotting

1.  Do stand close enough to more easily assist with the completion of a repetition if needed, but not close enough so you get a slapped with a 50 foot restraining order.

2.Do encourage the exerciser with some simple low volume words throughout a tough set, but don't cheer them on like a Lamaze coach...easy with the, 'PUSH, PUSH, BREATHE, PUSH, PUSH, BREATHE!'

3.Do  offer to come back after their rest period to spot them again if needed, but do not offer to come back everyday to spot them - you are not their new workout buddy.

4. Do use positive phrases to help motivate the exerciser like, 'You got it!', do not try reverse psychology like, 'You got this sissy?'.

5.Do help raise the weight if the exerciser is struggling with it, do not use their set to get your own workout - only help if they need it.

6.Do take an alternating grip (one palm up and one palm down) when spotting someone do a barbell bench press, do not only use both palms up. If they completely fail you'll be left with 200-300 lbs bicep curl, a hernia, and a very black and blue exerciser below you.

7.Do watch how their body is positioned in case their posture is off, but do not watch their body in an erie 'undress them with your eyes' way.
