Can You Cycle Off Your Cottage Cheese Thighs?

Posted by Lela D.

The Cellubike [http://www.cellubike.com/] claims to magically melt your bumpy fat deposits while you pedal. As long as you maintain a cool 75% of your maximum heart rate, infrared lights beam on your rear end. It's not a joke. This light supposedly penetrates your skin to soften the fat and increase blood flow to the area. All this is supposed to get rid of the ugly stuff, but come on! This may be just another snake oil, but you can bet ladies will be running to the nearest gym that installs Cellubikes. If it's cardio, it's burning fat. I file this one under the "can't hurt - might help" category.

Cellulite, despite what some may believe, is no different than any other 'fat' that is stored in our bodies. It's dimpled appearance is due to its location (lodged between the skin and the muscle), not because it contains some 'specialized' fat cells. Heredity plays a large role in each individuals' distribution and location of fat stores. To date, nothing short of a consistent, well-rounded, exercise program combined with a low-fat/moderately caloric daily meal plan and plenty of water seems to work for the long haul. Lotions, creams, massages, and the like have been shown to have temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite, but there is no long term effect.
