Sick of running the same old high school oval track? Had it up to here with jogging around your block every night? Trail running might be a good option for you! There are, of course, different types of trails to run, from groomed trails to hiking trails, so find one that suits the challenge you want. On challenging terrain, the American Council on Exercise recommends hiking a trail before breaking out the sprints.

One cool trail option I’d never heard of is “rails to trails,” unused railway lines throughout the United States that have been converted to running trails. Surfaces are usually paved, gravel or dirt, so they’re perfect for beginner trail runners. (Check out www.railtrail.org for trails near you!) — Erin
