I don't want to go to the gym!

Posted Aug 25 2008 3:09pm
Today like most days, I worked about 9 hours, biked home and said, "I do not want to go to the gym today." I thought up every excuse in the book, but the fact is if I don't go, I won't get better at Thai Boxing. I am sure everyone reading this has felt like blowing off a workout from time to time. When this happens you have a few options, take the day off and make sure to hit the gym extra hard tomorrow, do a home or outside workout , or suck it up and go anyways! Today I called myself a wimp, grabbed my gear and hit the gym.

The plan was brutal but simple, lift weights for 1 hour, then do 1 1/2 hours of Thai Boxing. You can imagine why I didn't want to go! I always do a simple barbell complex to warm-up, then I choose a movement to hit. I am a big fan of the One Lift Per Day Plan , popularized by Dan John. Today I picked Deadlifts . I did deadlifts for about 40 minutes, increasing the weight every other set until I was maxing out at triples. Between sets I like to play around a bit with dips or curls or neck work. I take about two minutes rest between sets, so I have some time to do axillary work.

Once I finished banging out deadlifts , I hit the mats for a brutal Thai Boxing workout. If you've read my previous posts you will know the drill. Thirty minutes of crazy conditioning as a warm-up, then fighting drills for one hours. After the class everyone was drenched in sweat and hunched over trying to catch their breath. The classes are very hard, but extremely rewarding.

This brings me to my point, I was tired, lazy and didn't feel like training before I went to the gym. When I was finished my training session, I had a feeling of accomplishment. I was happy, motivated and ready for tomorrow's workout. So, most of the time when you don't want to train, the best thing to do is call yourself out! Ask yourself the real reason you don't want to train, and then as my Dad used to say "Tough Rocks" and go anyways. Trust me, you will thank yourself after wards!
