I have been posting about using kettlebells to train your legs lately because many people still seem to think they need a machine to properly train the legs. Let me state this clearly, unless you are a competitive bodybuilder, there is no reason why you would ever have a reason to use a machine to train your legs. Squats, deadlifts and lunges are far superior for leg strength and development than any machine and will strengthen other parts of your body at the same time. I love to use heavy barbell training to build leg mass, but kettlebell deck squats are a great leg drill that makes your whole body work too.
Deck squats are as simple as they are tough. Start off lying on your back with a kettlebell in your hands being held by the horns. Now, roll up and stand up in one motion. Sounds easy right? Try it and if you manage to get up on your first try without landing on your ass I will be impressed. The trick is to do a pull over with the kettlebell as you roll forward and get the weight of the bell in front of your body when you are trying to get into a squat position.
Deck squats will improve the strength and mobility of your entire lower while also giving your core a solid workout too. Try out the no-momentum deck squats as Steve Maxwell coaches below for even more of a challenge.
