Tabata Sprints for Maximum Fat Loss

Posted Sep 13 2008 11:41pm

Everyone wants to lose weight in the least amount of time, but few people are effective at reducing their body fat levels and even fewer can keep it off! One of the most effective methods to burn body fat in a very short amount of time is the Tabata Sprint Protocol. Tabata Training was developed by speed skating coach Izumi Tabata at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. Ever seen a speed skater and wondered why they are so lean? Well, it is because they do a lot of sprint work, and sprinting burns fat like nothing else.

The Tabata Protocol is simple yet brutally effective. All you have to do is sprint for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds and repeat 8-12 times. The sprints can be done however you like them, on foot, on a bike, up a hill, with a kettlebell, with a barbell, using a body weight exercise or even on an elliptical trainer I suppose. The real key is to sprint like a madman during the 20 seconds and to just try and catch your breath during the rest phase. The kicker is, you will never be able to fully catch your breath and so will go further and further into oxygen debt as each set passes. Now, if you have not exercised in years do not just head over to the gym and bang out Tabata sprints, you might just die right there. But if you are fit and healthy they are super effective.

The other great benefit of Tabata sprints is that they are super quick to do! Including the warm-up and cool down the entire workout will last only about 12-15 minutes! Don't believe it is enough time to get a good fat burning workout in? Well, try them first then ask me why you are so hot and sweating so much? Two hours later ask my you are so hot and hungry for meat? I will tell you why now, you did a ton of hard work! That is right, sprints are very demanding on the body and when you force it to sprint in a state of oxygen debt it is very stressful on the body! I don't know all the science behind it, but I do know this, Tabata Sprints will make you burn fat!

How often should you do them? Well, how often can you? Probably no more than twice a week because they take a lot out of you. Especially when using a foot sprint or a weighted movement for the protocol. Use them sparingly but don't forget about them as they are an effective to lose weight and get lean! Check out the video below for a great example of Tabata Sprints!
