What does it take to become a champion?

Posted Aug 25 2008 3:09pm
Whenever you see a top athlete perform, everyone is in awe of their performance, then say it is all genetics. Now, is that before or after they have a sip of their beer and a plate full of chicken wings? Seriously guys, we all know that top athletes have great genetics, but what really separates them from the Average Joe is their long term commitment and work ethic. They don’t just train hard for a week or a month or a year. Success is most often achieved after 4-10 years of focused, hard work.

Most workouts should be so hard you are afraid you will pass out or throw up. Others might be easier, but should definitely have a distinct purpose for improving your ability to compete at your chosen sport. Check out this video of Rich Franklin to get an idea of what hard work is.

Dan John wrote a great article called The Journey to Excellence for www.t-nation.com about the road to excellence and what it takes to become a champion. He writes about training for your goals not for the mirror and emulating role models in your sport. For another great Dan John article, click here .
