Trying New Foods

Posted by Lis S.

Inspired by the grapefruit success story, I thought I'd share some ideas on getting kids to try, and enjoy, new foods.

This website explains why it's important to get your kids to eat a variety of foods: http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/trying_new_foods.html

According to this website (http://bblocks.samhsa.gov/family/walk/tryingfoods.aspx) some kids may need to try a fod 5-10 times before they like it! Don't quit serving something just because it was rejected the first time!

I usually serve at least one food that the kid(s) is familiar with and likes along with the new food or foods. But I like to choose something that's not a treat or a real favorite to encourage them to try something new. This way there's food to eat if they really are hungry and really aren't enjoying the new food, but they won't skip trying the new food just because there's a huge bowl of macaroni and cheese, their favorite thing ever, sitting right in front of them.
