Another Cholesterol CopyCat Drug

Posted May 20 2009 1:21pm

In what I would call a really advanced notice press release, two giants in the Big Pharma group have announced they will be pairing their two drugs for cholesterol into one pill. The pills are Zetia© and Lipitor©. We already have Zetia© and Zocor© combined in Vytorin©. The new pill, unnamed as yet, will likely not appear till 2010 so why announce it now? And why are they waiting till 2010? That's when Lipitor© goes generic, and its maker needs to protect its market share somehow with a spin-off drug.
Zetia's© sales last year were $1.96 billion and Vytorin© has over $1 billion in sales so this is obviously a huge market with lots of profits available for Big Pharma.
And why bother anyway? The real issue in protecting your circulation from plaques is lowering your overall inflammation as much as possible. I recommend patients try multiple approaches to lowering inflammation after measuring blood levels of hsCRP, homocysteine, fibrinogen and ferritin.
There are a number of books in my Amazon book pages that teach how to reduce inflammation and reverse heart disease.
If you have high cholesterol levels and need treatment, is  important to measure the particle sizes of your LDL and HDL cholesterol using a test called the VAP profile which is readily available now and covered by insurance in most cases. If your particle sizes are small and dense then you are at higher risk for plaque formation than if the particle sizes are large and foamy. Particle size can be shifted from small to large using the statin drugs, although the FDA has not given anyone permission to say this. Even better, a wonderful natural supplement, Niacin, can do it just as well without the side effects of statins.
