The power of the mind is something which has always intrigued many people and while we know a lot more about how the brain works than we did a decade ago, there are many areas which are as yet untouched. We know about the different areas of the brain which control different aspects of our thought, movement, smell, etc and we know how some of these can be corrected if they go wrong, but can you really “think yourself healthy”?
Many people may not realise but the brain is capable of releasing a whole array of different chemicals when certain actions or thoughts occur in our daily lives. For example those who become claustrophobic or have a similar fear of certain situations will encounter what is known as the “fight or flight” scenario.
Fight or flight is the instant when something occurs and your brain registers a change, very quickly your brain will decide whether to either “fight” – allowing you to stay in the situation and fight the feelings - or “flight” whereby it will induce for example a quick heart beat and sweating so that you feel the need to leave the situation.
When people become nervous in certain situation, many of which have no real danger, it is very often the “internal wiring” of the brain which has become mixed up. Certain exercises such as deep breathing, thinking calming thoughts, etc can bring the situation under control and it is then possible to teach your body to stay and “fight” the situation rather than “force” you to leave.
While this may sound a little absurd to many people, it is actually a well known situation in the medical profession, and something which can be “fixed” with help. Of course there are situation where your body should “force” you into the “flight” mode, i.e. when it senses or perceives danger is on the way.
Do not under estimate the power of the mind for we have literally only scratched the surface of its power so far!
