In the past decade there has been a 150% increase in the number of PE-related injuries in students of all ages. The study, conducted by researches at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for the Center for Injury Research and Policy, found lower extremity strains and sprains to be the most common injuries. Lower extremity sprains and strains accounted for 23% of all injuries, while upper extremity sprains and strains accounted for 14% and fractures 14%. Nearly 70% of all the injuries occurred while the students were participating in one of six sports, football, running, basketball, volleyball, soccer or gymnastics. Elementary school children had the highest incidence of head injuries, while middle school children had the highest injury rate. Seventy five percent of all injuries occurred in boys. Luckily, most of the injuries were minor and 98% of the children who were seen by a physician were released immediately.
