A deep venous thrombosis, also known as a DVT, is the formation of a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg. The risk factors for DVT include recent surgery, best rest, immobility, long travel, blood clotting disorders, birth control pills, chronic illness, smoking, previous and family history of DVT. The most serious consequence of a deep vein thrombosis is if the clot breaks loose, travels to the lungs and impairs breathing.
