Katie Wernecke

I just read this mind-boggling story about the plight of the Wernecke's. (H/T: NewsTarget ) What an entirely bizarre story pitting parents against the state to determine who has the right to decide for a child's medical care.

The Texas Monthly article on Katie's blog is a bit long, but informative. I would summarize the story as girl gets cancer, doctors want to do chemo/radiation, parents allow chemo but subsequent research on the internet gets them spooked about radiation. Since parents won't do radiation, doctors call Child Protective Services who take the girl from her family and force the radiation anyways. Meanwhile, a legal battle ensues over who has the right to decide what for Katie.

Bizarre and scary.

Btw, I know there are numerous alternatives to conventional chemo/radiation, but I really don't know much about any of them. So don't take my posting this story as if I whole heartedly believe they should not have done radiation and are doing the right thing with high-dose Vitamin C treatments. I just think the entire story is a very interesting anecdote on the medical / legal system. Maybe Wayne Rankin will have some interesting analysis on this case.

Regardless, my prayers to Katie and her family. I hope the time on the beach in Hawaii turns out to be beneficial for you!
