Pain in left middle to lower quadrant and able to feel rope like structure in my abdomen???

I have had a pain in my left abdominal quadrant about 2-3 inches away from my belly button. If I press in deeply I think I can feel my colon...I can feel a transverse tube like structure. I can't find any information on line and I going to the doctor next week. This pain occassionaly burns a litte, is achy or nothing at all. I feel it might be connected to what I am eating--bubbly, spicy or milk products seem to exacerbate it but the feeling of my colon or some strange long evenly shaped transverse mass is throwing me off.
