Raw Milk in Arizona

Posted Sep 14 2008 5:34pm

I believe milk is another one of those "man tried to make it better but inadvertently made it worse, but sure came up with a clever ad campaign to sell a bunch of it" stories. I've blogged a little bit about the benefits of raw milk before here and here. In general, the problem with pasteurized milk, which is 99.9% of what is on the store shelves, is that pasteurization heats up the milk and kills all the beneficial bacteria/probiotics. Over time, if we do not feed our GI tract probiotics, it can leading to many chronic gastronintestinal issues.

Someone in our office recently dug this up from www.RealMilk.org and I thought I'd post it since I've had people ask me this question before.

Queen Creek (SE of Phoenix): 22 March 2005 - Crème de la Moo is now bottling Grade A organic raw milk. We secured state licensure to begin operations for bottling the 9th of March 2005. Today we were able to meet state bacteria count standards. We are beginning distribution to the stores listed on our website, www.cremedelamoo.com. Thank you for your patience and all those who've offered their help and stood by us over the 13 months since we initiated the quest for local, organic raw milk. We're celebrating now!!!! E-mail: itsraw@cremedelamoo.com. Phone: (480) 275-8227.

Tucson: HoofsnHorns Farm (520) 616-7975, for info on goats & cows contact Shelby at hoofsnhorns@earthlink.net or shelbysgoats@aol.com. See some of the critters and find out about them at their website www.hoofsnhorns.com.

Wilhoit: Copper Basin Dairy, 8160 Webster, Wilhoit, AZ 86332. Lisa Gartner, (928) 442-9790 gartner@peoplepc.com. I am working to open a Grade A goat dairy, producing raw milk and cheese and other milk products. I am in the beginning stages and am in need of investors and funding sources. I have nubian goats. I am hoping to be licensed by summer of 2006.

What I find interesting about raw cow milk, besides it's obvious health benefits, is the taste -- it sounds gross considering how we've been societally conditioned to think "raw = bad." But the taste of whole raw milk is really quite delicious. Raw butter, made from raw milk, is another treasure that I highly recommend.
