red swelling under skin?

I had one on the inside of my right calf, now one on my left shin. A girlfriend has one ont the back of her neck. Mine are red, ache, warm to the touch, about 2 inches across. The one on the right leg has gone down, but left a bruise. Just noticed the one on the left shin. My friends is achey and 'fleshy'. Her doctor says it's nothing - it is something. She had an MRI.
There are no puncture marks, not a cyst with an opening, etc.
